A 20-year-old woman is found to have a BP of 200/120mmHg. There is left ventricular hypertrophy but her examination is otherwise normal. Urinalysis and microscopy are normal. She is on no medications. Initial blood tests show:
Sodium 136mmol/L (135-145)
Potassium *2.9mmol/L (3.4-4.5)
Chloride 100mmol/L (95–110)
Urea 4.5mmol/L (3.0-8.0)
Creatinine 0.08mmol/L (0.05-0.11)
Plasma renin is measured and is found to be elevated. Which one of the following is the most likely diagnosis?

(A) Essential hypertension
(B) Diuretic abuse
(C) Renal artery stenosis
(D) Conn syndrome
(E) Phaeochromocytoma
