A 26 year old male presents with a history of recent bilious vomiting followed by a large volume of bright red hematemesis. He is pale, sweaty and anxious, complaining of mild epigastric pain. Blood pressure is 80/50 mm Hg, pulse 128/minute. All of the following steps are included in the initial management of this patient, except
