A 32-year-old woman who had a multiload (Cu375) intrauterine device (IUCD) inserted six months ago, now presents with six weeks of amenorrhoea and a positive pregnancy test. On examination, the strings of the device, which would be expected in normal circumstances to be visible protruding through the external os, are not visible on speculum inspection of the cervix. She seeks advice as to what should be done. She is keen to proceed with the pregnancy. Which one of the following is the most appropriate immediate next step in management?
(A) Ultrasound of the pelvis
(B) Uterine sounding
(C) X-ray the pelvis
(D) Hysteroscopy
(E) Laparoscopy
