A patient with a three-month history of anorexia and weight loss is found to have a carcinoma of the stomach. Surgery involving a gastric resection has been recommended. The patient has been advised by the attending surgeon that as he, the surgeon, is about to go overseas for a week, the operation will be deferred until the specialist returns, as the surgeon would feel uncomfortable not being available in the immediate postoperative period. The surgeon has advised the patient that a 10-day delay in the surgery would make no difference to his outcome. The patient becomes quite upset and is not satisfied with what he sees as an unnecessary delay in his treatment. As the referring doctor, which one of the following is the most appropriate management option advice?
(A) Refer the patient to another surgeon
(B) Suggest the patient gets a legal opinion on the inappropriate delay
(C) Contact the hospital patient advocate
(D) Have the patient admitted via the Emergency Department
(E) Reinforce the specialist's advice
