Module 02: Child and Adolescent Health (Assessment)
Adam an 18 month old child is brought to you after his mother noted his to be coughing and wheezing over the last one day. Both his parents have Bronchial Asthma and his mother is concerned as to whether Adam might also be developing Bronchial Asthma. Examination shows a boy who is generally well and not in distress. Lung findings reveal decreased breath sounds over the left lung along with bilateral wheezing which is more marked on the left. What would be the most appropriate next step to take in terms of management?

A. Prescribe symptomatic treatment along with a trial of salbutamol therapy.
B. Arrange for inspiratory and expiratory chest X-rays.
C. Arrange for admission into hospital as you feel the child has Bronchial Asthma and will require specialist intervention at this stage.
D. Give nebulised salbutamol 4 hourly until the wheezing resolves.
E. Prescribe antibiotics as there is a likelihood of pneumonia.
